The four color seasons

Seasonal color analysis sorts people on three axes: warm or cool, light or deep, clear or muted. The four season names are shorthand for the combinations. Spring

Warm · light · clear

Spring colouring is warm and bright at the same time. There is golden warmth in the skin and usually a genuine lightness to hair and eyes, so colors that are both clean and sunlit look right, while anything dusty flattens the face.

Summer

Cool · light to medium · muted

Summer colouring is cool and gently blended. Contrast between hair, skin and eyes is low, so the colors that work are softened — a blue with grey in it rather than a blue straight from the tube.

Autumn

Warm · medium to deep · muted

Autumn colouring is warm and rich, with depth rather than brightness. The colors that work look like they have been mixed with a little earth — rust instead of red, olive instead of emerald.

Winter

Cool · deep · clear

Winter colouring is cool and high-contrast. Hair, skin and eyes sit far apart in depth, so the face can carry colors at full strength — and it needs them, because muted shades read as dirty against it.
